Migraines galore

21 November 2008 18 Comments

I thought I would go ahead and post since this seems as though it’s going to be one of my unfortunate months.  I say that because it has already started with a vengeance, the migraines just will not stop.  One of those pains that you have all day, go to bed with, wake up with and the cycle continues.

Unfortunately, Tylenol and other OTC meds don’t do much for hormonal migraines.

As most of you Women know, trying to continue all of your daily tasks, for me-continuing to take care of 4 kids, a headache makes life down-right difficult and miserable.

4 yr olds don’t understand that loud noises are extremely painful.

I haven’t figured out if the weather has made this month worse, in Texas it’s not overly cold, but the weather has definitely changed and it’s cool.  Of course, there is no rhyme or reason to PMDD, but I do like to watch for any sort of trends.  Who knows, maybe one day these trends will make sense and a break through will happen.

Anyway, sorry for the blah post, I just hadn’t had these sort of migraines for a while now and thought that since this is a very personal and honest site I would post.

I hope the rest of you have a better month than me, nothing like traveling at Thanksgiving time feeling like crap! Grrrr…

I have come to realize that Zoloft with Yaz is not for me.

I was on Zoloft and TriNessa but my doctor wanted me to change over to Yaz. After the first month of taking Yaz I felt my mood swings starting to come back. Month two was semi okay and this month I feel like I’m going crazy, I feel worse than before or maybe thats just because I was doing so good before. I called my doctor and she is putting me back on TriNessa, I just hope it don’t take that long to get my mood swings under control. I’m not sure how i survived before with out any meds.

    Happy Holidays!

I’m glad you got it taken care of so quickly. It’s so frustrating when you are feeling good and then you change. At least your doc is listening to you and going with what you are telling him/her you need.

I’m just like you and have to have my meds in order to be the best I can be. LOL
That with exercise and descent eating habits. :)

I have been on Yaz for 9 months now due to PMDD symptoms and my horrible migraines. Before starting the Yaz, I had a migraine every month along with the horrendous mood swings and pretty much all other symptoms that you all have described. For the first two months on Yaz, nothing changed. Then month 3-6 seemed to be working well, except for the migraine. Unfortunatly, the good times did not last, for the last 3 months, I have not had a period at all and my migraines have increased to at least 1 per week and sometimes 2 a week. The fatigue has come back too, it hits me like a steamroller. I barely make it through the day at work (desk job) and then when I get home I don’t even want to look at the kitchen to cook or laundry (I used to love to cook!!!)

I know that I am worse now than I was before ever taking the meds, my poor husband thinks I hate him. I don’t want to be a loving wife–all I want to do when I get home from work is take a long bath and then go to bed. I have scheduled an appointment with my doctor for 2 weeks from now to discuss this issue. On our last visit, she told me that if the Yaz did not work by itself, we would try adding antidepressants too. I just wish that I could crawl under a rock and stay there!!!!!

    Amy,
I just hate that others have to go thru this. I SO wish that we could drink a miracle drink, take a miracle drug, anything and be cured! It makes me so angry!
I can tell you that Yaz has been a life saver for a few Women, unfortunately, for most Women that have tried it, it does like most BC does, it makes the PMDD worse.

All of your symptoms are just like the rest of ours. After working all day the thought of doing one more task seems like it’s as big as literally saving the world. Personally, if it were me, I wouldn’t continue with the Yaz in addition to the anti-depressant. Have you ever used any anti-depressant on it’s own? Also, Prozac, Sarafem and I believe Zoloft can be used just during your 2 wk time if you wanted to start out that way rather than using every day.

For a lot of Women with PMDD this works, just taking the pill for 2 wks. For me personally I have to take it everyday, but like I said, for a lot, it works great the other way.

Rather than going to bed, maybe you could veg out on the couch so that you are still around your husband. You may not be talking a lot, but at least he would still be by you, feeling as though he wasn’t alone. :)

Let us know how the doctors appt goes. Believe me, that rock you talk about, some months we would all be there! Hang in there.

Well, I guess you could say I have tried an antidepressent alone before. I used to work for a family practice doc and when I told him what was going on he put me on Lexapro. It helped a little, but not much. He thought I was depressed and that was it. My female ARNP is the only one that has even attempted to treat me for PMDD. This will be my first time back since starting the Yaz so I will ask her about not using both together. Thanks for the input!!! I will let you know how the appt. goes.

Prozac, Sarafem, Zoloft are the only ones that have truly been ’said’ for PMDD. I know Yaz has been thrown in there now too, but for anti-depressants, those are the 3.
I know people are given others, but I would start with one of those 3 listed.

I went to see my doc last Friday and she immediately yanked me of the Yaz. My blood pressure was high–I have never had high BP except for during a pregnancy. She put me on Inderal LA which is a BP med and a migraine inhibitor. She told me she uses it for migraines too. She also put me on Zoloft to try. I am 3 days into the new meds so it is too soon to note any changes but I am optimistic!

I had PMS symptoms before my doctor put me on YAZ. Within 6 months I had full blown and severe PMDD symmptoms; migraine headaches, lethargy, extreme mood swings, strange food cravings or no appetite at all, excrutiating body, joint and muscle pain plus thoughts of suicide! After 2 years of suffering, exhausting every other option, I had my ovaries removed. I have been symptom free now for 4 wonderful months. Wish I would have done it sooner but luckily I did it before I lost my family or my life. Good luck to you all in whatever form of treatment you choose. My prayers are with you!

Hi, I am curious as to how you found a doctor willing to do an oopherectomy. I am trying and getting rejected by 2 docs so far. I am 38 y.o. not married and no children. I realized I had PMDD when all my symptoms are cyclical and this has truly inhibited my life since 13 y.o.
any ideas on how to find a dr. to do the surgery?

    Hi Nadine,
When I had my ovaries and uterus removed last year I was 44 y.o., two older children and had already had my tubes tied 10 years prior. I had a history of extreme bleeding that an ablation had not cured and a family history of ovarian cancer on my mother’s side. All of this combined is what finally convinced my doctor it was time for a change. I too had been denied by doctors when I was younger. All I can say is hang in there and keep asking to you find one that will help you. Good luck!

    Hi Stef,

Great Post! I tried Yaz but it made me very moody and hard to live with as I was always snapping at my husband and kids. So at the moment I am not taking anything but the doctor has suggested I take Zoloft so I will see what happens and hopefully will be ok!
